This pendant design is based on a drawing by Ernst Haeckel of the underside of an Anthomedusae jellyfish, Discalia medusina. Technically, jellyfish are not true ‘fish’ because they are invertebrates. Most aquariums refer to them more correctly as ‘jellies.’ This particular species of jelly belongs to the order Siphonophore. Members of this order are not single organisms, but consist of multiple organisms living together in a colony. The central mouth of the Discalia jelly is surrounded by its reproductive organs and these are protected by eight motile tentacles. Prof. Haeckel was fascinated by the medusae jellies, and even named his home in Jena, Germany the “Villa Medusa” in their honor.
