This design is based on a drawing of the larval form of the sea cucumber, Synapta digitata, by Ernst Haeckel. It is named based on its uncanny resemblance to the Hindu deity Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, often depicted as a man with multiple arms and an elephant head. Sea cucumber larvae, as well as starfish larvae, have complex, convoluted transparent forms which bear little resemblance to the final organism. The larvae swim around freely by means of cilia encircling their bodies and become less motile later in their development. Because of their slow movement, adult sea cucumbers must defend themselves by producing toxins.
