Tetrahymena

Biology

The Tetrahymena pendant was inspired by the model organism Tetrahymena thermophila, a single-celled, ciliated protozoan that lives in freshwater streams and lakes. Because it possesses two distinct nuclei, a smaller one that directs sexual reproduction and a larger one responsible for somatic growth, it is an interesting model organism for molecular biology. Tetrahymena can be easily genetically manipulated by transformation and gene knock-outs and thus is used extensively to determine gene function. Tetrahymena move with the aid of hundreds of cilia on their cell surface.

The Tetrahymena pendant can be purchased in my Shapeways shop and my Etsy shop (click on thumbnails below for links).
